14 ounces whole-wheat macaroni twists, elbow macaroni, or other short, tubular pasta

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon butter or margarine

1 large onion (12 ounces), cut into ¼-inch pieces

2 garlic cloves, crushed with garlic press

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cumin

¾ teaspoon ground coriander

¼ teaspoon ground allspice

¼ teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper

1 can (28 ounces) low sodium crushed tomatoes

2½ cups (1½ [15-ounce] cans) garbanzo beans (preferably fewer than 140 mg sodium per ½ cup, such as Eden Organic or Goya Low Sodium Chickpeas), rinsed and drained

¼ cup loosely packed fresh parsley leaves, chopped
